Interesting, given he has such a large fan base…It would bring Linux to the forefront. His honest reply about the state of Linux Gaming might sway some of his audience to experiment with Linux.

Before commenting, I did check and saw that he cleaned up his act after that white supremacist shit he was peddling. So that’s good, having positive role models for young people only makes the world better.

His honest reply about the state of Linux Gaming

I’m betting it’s far from anything ‘honest.’ Stir up a little controversy (even if it’s as stupid as linux/windows fanbois arguing in the comments), get more clicks and rewards for ‘engagement’ from the algorithm.

Maybe he is happy with linux as a system, but I bet this was thought over before it was posted.

PewDiePie isn’t my first choice for role model, but I don’t really have a say in that. So yeah, I’m happy when a public figure challenges their assumptions and tries something new.

Good on them, I hope it encourages curiosity in young kids.

I do too, I hope he can make a lot of people curious, not just children! Yeah, it helps others challenge their own assumptions and trying something new when a public figure tries (fails a bit on the way, but ultimately succeeds). Doing something new will mean you stumble a bit here and there, the fact he didn’t hesitate looking things up during the process is a good reminder to constantly ask questions and find answers.

Role Models aren’t chosen, they just end up resonating with people and helping shape positive changes within others…He has a lot of people who resonate with him and are inspired by him. The fact that he considered his ideas before going deep into the racist pipeline and turned it around makes him a good role model in my opinion. He took a break from YouTube, reflected on his choices, and came back after making a decision to shows others there is a better way to handle controversy. He didn’t double down, sink deeper into the cesspool of racist ideology, he resurfaced as a better person instead. That says a lot about his character, it makes him a positive influence. All people stumble along the road of life, but that doesn’t mean you have to fall to a level that some exist on; you can become an elevated person instead.

Just a reminder for people here: People can change and do better.

A lot of his old content are basically edgy, toxic, and too much. He basically did racist joke towards various groups of people, just for the sake of anger them. Even a lot of his fans also often recognizing those mistake and asked him to do better.

He’s now a husband and a father. He’s not doing any these joke anymore. He already recognizing his past mistake and do much better these days.

All of his content is now simple wholesome and even inspiring. His several drawing content is actually often being shared among art community.

Let’s celebrate when people recognize their mistake and doing things better!

He was never a nazi in the first place. His basically a classic trait of toxic gamer, making a racist remarks towards everyone.

Back when he did Hitler joke stuff, he instantly got backlash from his own community. He recognized the mistake and stopped doing it again.

I can assure you, these people are often doing it for banter or just for edginess. Never actually hates people.

I’m from SEA region, and people in SEA online gaming community did this all the time. Mocking each other ethnic groups or nationalities, while not actually hating each other, except for small minorities of course. Making Hitler joke, N-word, and other local edgy jokes.

Not saying this is a good thing.

Again, even his fans constantly asking him to do better all the time. And he’s now a better person.

I recommend to check his video about 100 days art journey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJDtQTTAogk It’s one of high-regarding art journey video that even contantly get shared and reacted among art community.

Brazen accusations and using the word Nazi like a t-shirt gun is why when people do things that are actually reflective of Nazi ideals, like Elon’s fortnite emote, people immediately stop listening. This doesn’t help anyone.

What he did back then was basically “edgy toxic gamer,” making edgy content just for the sake of angering people. Like his entire Pewdiepie vs T-series that actually makes a lot of Indian national angry. I remember all of his Indian fans telling him that all of his jokes are too much.

He’s now stop doing those edgy jokes, even recognizing those stuff.

All of his content right now is basically just a dad/husband doing cool stuff with his family.

We should anticipate, encourage and hope for this. All edgy teens leave the homeroom eventually and need to evolve once the pressure to be shitbags for cheap gratification and clique standing is removed.

Glad if he’s evolved. Only know OF him, not a fan or a R.L acquaintance so I can only care so much while lacking that parasocial link, but better is still better.

It’s absolutely true, look it up if you don’t believe it.

So first thing I found was this time in 2018 where he found a video by a creator called E;R about death note, and reccomended him without doing a background check. So E;R was a racist and Felix didn’t look further into it. When he was called out, he edited it out and publicly apologized. I don’t think that makes him a Nazi, he just forgot to research what he was promoting. [1]

Now here’s the second thing, which actually involves malicious intent:

Felix Kjellberg, who has 53 million subscribers to his “PewDiePie” YouTube channel, reacts as two men hold up a sign saying “Death to All Jews,” in a screenshot of a video he posted online. Mr. Kjellberg paid them to hold up the sign. The video was published Jan. 11 and pulled from YouTube this past weekend. The Indian men in the video apologized publicly in a video saying “we don’t really know what the message means.”

          [2]

Now obviously paying people to say antisemitic comments is terrible, and I think Felix was trying to phrase this as some sort of “”“joke”“” but I don’t think this makes him a Nazi.

There hasn’t been a history of behaviour resembling that of the ideals of Nazis from Felix, especially not enough to say that he partakes in those ideologies. Thankfully his "dark humour " phase ended years ago and he isn’t doing these things anymore, so completely estranging him from anything for it is quite extreme, especially when I have seem some of this sentiment on Lemmy myself. Nor do I think he’s a horrible person for edgy comments and actions that most of us have definitely done one way or another on the Internet.

“Death to All Jews,” Mr. Kjellberg paid them to hold up the sign.

            Right?

If rich people can’t pay poor people to hold a “death to jews” sign without being label nazi anymore, what can the even do… Maybe he’s autistic. What’s next, you wont have the right to say the n word live or recommend a nazi channel to your millions of young followers??

The left is ruining everything, we can’t even do a roman salute anymore without not facing any fucking consequences.

That. He would have started YouTube at 20 and the guy is now 35. That would have happened when he was 28.

People change, people learn. That one in particular hit him hard and probably led to a lot of self reflection and all that stuff.

We have actual nazis to deal with that actually think it’s a good idea. There’s a huge difference between a bad dark joke and actually supporting facism. How one responds after such an incident matters a lot.

Meanwhile Elon did a literal nazi salute and isn’t even denying it nor apologizing and doubling down on it.

I had my share of hitler jokes, but they were told on a context when it was seen as poking fun at a solved issue of the past in a very progressive area, when nobody thought we’d be dumb enough to witness facism ever again. Context and meaning are both very important before labeling someone for life.

Want to remind everyone that it’s not just Elon who’s done the Nazi salute. Steve Bannon has followed his example. A couple others as well, including a fucking pastor. The Fourth Reich wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card but I guess here we are.

I choose to believe they’re also being edgy in a very untasteful way, but mostly because I honestly can’t do much about it. My options essentially are:

                • assume the best - still bad, but it ends in 4 years with a peaceful handover of power to the next President
                • assume the worst - we turn into something like Nazi Germany and it doesn’t end after 4 years

My actions now assuming either are equivalent. I’m going to keep going to my day job, spending time with my family, and helping people in my community. If my country actually goes fascist, am I going to join some resistance group? Probably not, because there’s no way I’m standing up to the US military. Am I going to move to another country? Probably not, because the US would likely crush whatever country I move to anyway.

The chances of the US actually going fascist are incredibly small; higher than I’d like, but still small. Trump and Musk will certainly shake things up, but I highly doubt they’ll achieve a hostile takeover, or even try. Because why would they? Trump is old, surely he doesn’t really want more than 4 years anyway, and trying to justify Musk as the President isn’t happening (he’s ineligible constitutionally, he didn’t win any election, and he doesn’t even hold an office in the line of succession).

                The simplest explanations are:

                1. Musk is really persuasive - look at how he convinced investors to invest with him and give him a $50B bonus
                2. Trump is a narcissist, so which means he’s easy to convince if you appeal to that
                3. Musk is childish and entitled, so he’s cosplaying as a powerful figure

This explanation makes a lot more sense than some weird obsession with fascism: Trump wants to be remembered (for good or ill) and Musk is just messing around. Jumping to fascism is a leap, but again, my actions in either scenario are the same, so I’ll choose to believe the more likely, less bad option.

To me the Fiverr thing was clearly a really bad taste dark humor joke and a test of if they’d really write anything you told them to rather than his actual beliefs. It was really dumb and irresponsible to keep in the video though.

I think it’s kind of funny though, not because of the message, but because it’s a complete slap in the face of “cancel culture.” It’s ironically baiting people to “cancel” him for trying to get others “cancelled.”

He could have instead written “death to Indians” and it would’ve been similarly on-the-nose dark humor. The message here is only relevant in that you’re getting people to do something they wouldn’t normally do (if they understood what it meant) for a small amount of money. He’s not saying Indians are Nazis, or even that he is a Nazi, he’s merely poking fun at how easy it is to get someone go so something atrocious.

That said, I would never do it because I’m not a jerk. That doesn’t mean I don’t find it funny and ironic though.

Now, I pay no attention at all to pewdiepie, and this is the first I’ve heard about this paying people to hold up an anti-semitic sign as a “joke”, or whatever, but from my limited knowledge, this sort of behavior is absolutely the hallmark of a horrible person. There is a world of difference between the average “edgy” comment and paying people to hold up a sign that says “death to all jews”.

The difference is dark humor. Maybe it’s not for you, and it’s not really for me, but surely you can recognize the humor and irony in it if you take a moment. It’s kind of like Ashton Kutcher’s “punk’d,” but even less tasteful. Similar “edgy” content with a different theme would be something like llamas with hats, which jokes about murder (including nuclear bombs) and sociopathy, with graphic, hand drawn images. It’s very dark, but there’s absolutely humor there.

The important thing is to recognize it for what it is (dark humor) and not affix any additional meaning to it. Gamers are notoriously toxic and edgy, but that doesn’t mean they believe the nonsense they spew.

Nazis legitimately support ethnic cleansing and authoritarian control in government, and will support any measure that benefits the government and the majority over minorities. I don’t see any of that in PewDiePie, just tasteless jokes with very edgy themes.

Problem is, there are fundamental issues with gaming on Linux that keeps it in neverending circle of “not my problem” attitude from game developers.

Proton layer is amazing achievement, but it just makes game devs not give a shit with native Linux games because “someone else” will fix their Windows game to run on Linux anyway. And if there are no native games for it, the market share never actually moves and all other devs just look at it and say “Proton layer will do my job anyway”. And so shit just never moves anywhere. In fact it has regressed. There used to be tons of native Linux games for Unreal Engine and Quake 3 Engine. Not anymore for a very long time now.

Is it worse though? What’s the actual benefit of Linux native if performance with Proton is largely the same?

I’ve been gaming on Linux since before Steam on Linux was a thing, and things are way better now than they’ve ever been. Yeah, there were more native Linux ports, but total game selection was much worse, and WINE compat was buggy more often than not.

Proton solves the chicken and egg problem of devs not supporting Linux because the audience is small, and the audience being small because of limited selection. Here’s what I’ve seen on Linux:

            1. Only a handful of Linux native games outside of FOSS - notables were Minecraft and FTL, and I mostly found them on Humble Bundle; WINE was another option, but good luck
            2. Steam comes to Linux, and brings hundreds of native Linux games - no compat layer though, but still decent selection - I made my account in 2013 when the client was released; game library explodes
            3. Proton is a thing - now I can play a bunch of Windows games I couldn’t before; game library explodes again
            4. Steam Deck is released, and with it a ton of fixes for Proton - game library swells substantially, and my collection of games with technical issues dwindles
            5. Game devs start actually testing games on Steam OS, enable anti-cheat support on Linux, etc

Gaming on Linux is better than it ever has, and I honestly don’t even prefer native ports anymore because Proton has gotten so good. With step 5, we’re on the cusp of Linux gaming being mainstream outside of Steam Deck, and that’s when games will support Linux en masse, which means:

            • more anticheat support
            • less buggy day 1 experience
            • more users switching from windows

I’ll happily trade native Linux ports for orders of magnitude more games. Maybe we’ll get more native ports eventually for a few extra FPS, but honestly, I don’t care about that anymore.

And it gets worse, through system updates there are old native games that no longer work on modern systems. Meanwhile I can grab a random windows game from the 90s or early 2000s and it’ll probably work via proton.

Tbf there are old native games on Windows that don’t work on new systems. Few years ago when I was still using Win10 I couldn’t get LOTR BFME to run. I think it’s just part of an evolving ecosystem.

Speaking of, I should see if I can install BFME on Linux. I still have my old hard copy hanging around :>

Yup, just find the Proton version that works and you’re good. Games can be kept running much longer with compatibility layers much like how emulators keep console games going.

I still hope for it to flip back eventually. You need gamers to be gaming on Linux for them to eventually dip into gamedev on Linux. When that happens, they’re definitely not going to develop for Windows first and use Proton to make it work on their system. Of course, yes, this may take a long time to actually happen.
