I’m curious if this is a common thing. For me there are many such games. I hardly play games at all anymore, and when I do it’s mostly singleplayer indie titles. Yet for some reason I can’t stop myself from engaging with a lot of games I used to play.

CS:GO for example. I haven’t played it for years and have no real intention of coming back, yet I still find myself watching youtube videos, following the patch notes and engaging in online discussions. And it’s far from the only example for me.

Any weirdos out there that do the same?

I spend a lot of time thinking and talking about DnD, but the closest I get to playing is a Group chat where every week people post “Sorry, Can’t this week”.

I love the community of Minetest (basically open-source Minecraft), but very rarely do I have the creativity in me to actually play it.

I’ve considered making mods for it instead, or just straight up contributing to the game engine itself.

I keep trying to replay Minecraft and it just can’t hold my attention for long. I still follow the updates to it closely however. Maybe I should intentionally distance myself from it for a while instead, make it feel fresh again. Same thing applies to Terraria as well.

Same here, I’ve been taking a hard break from it though. I’ve also played so much modded that the base game isn’t that enjoyable unless on a big smp where I can flex my combat and redstone skills, even then I find a modded server with friends more fun.

Also if you haven’t played modded, check it out. Id recommend getting the Forge launcher (although there has been some drama with Forge recently, might wait until that clears up) and look through some modpacks. I especially recommend Create: Above and Beyond

Yeah, for me personally, like once a year, I get the urge to start a new map and build a tiny village and then I’m good for a while. I usually play in creative mode, too, so I can get anything done in that time…

I play Minecraft very rarely, but I still watch my favourite childhood YouTubers, e.g., EthosLab.

I’m still in a dozen anarchy Minecraft discords. I’m inactive and haven’t played consistently for a couple years but I like the occasional ping.

This is the one for me too. Wasn’t ever a dedicated player but got into following the scene because a classmate was competitive on the pro circuit way back.

I haven’t played a game myself in ten years probably but still enjoy listening to the Limited Resources set review podcasts for some reason, and will watch an LSV draft video now and then.

Destiny 2. I just can’t do the grind all the time anymore. I usually play the first few weeks of the season until the story is done and then wait for the next one. I’m kind of burned out at the moment though so I’m just going to wait for final shape to drop.

Me and my friends played Destiny since 2014, but for the past two years, our play time has dropped to 0. It’s just not a game we enjoy getting on everyday anymore. I hope it gets back to the game I loved playing one day, so I still keep up with all the news and updates. I also love the lore, so I’ll watch lore videos or read the books.

    Yup.

The competitive games ive played extensively at some point, dota and csgo mostly. path of exile isnt competitive but that too.

And the games/franchises/studios that ive really enjoyed and ocasionally go back to/keep up with news/possible sequels or dlc/etc.

Fallout, God of War, Elden Ring/FromSoft in general tbh, Slay the Spire, anything from Supergiant, etc.

    Most FromSoftware games.

Absolutely love the lore and writing, love the environments and character designs and atmosphere. It’s a shame that I mostly find the games to be a boring slog to actually play.

So I watch Let’s Players and while they do the fighting, I can take the time to really enjoy how well-polished everything is and throw open the wiki and read through item flavor text or other bits of info.

I can somewhat relate to this, for me it’s with Hollow Knight. While I wouldn’t say I find it boring, I’ve just played through it all and have little interest in replaying. Yet the world and story is so interesting to me that I still love to watch others play and talk about it.

League of legends. Esports is really enjoyable but I can’t bring myself to waste anymore time on the game. I get the itch and then it ends up fading quickly

For me, it’s dead or dying live services I suppose. Like Spacelords, and Paladins. They are “games” that frankly treat their players like pay pigs and I’m not interested in all that. I still happily discuss the world and characters though.

Yeah I’m like this with World of Warcraft. Haven’t seriously played it since 2017 but still follow news about it. I’ve come to terms with the fact the game is now utterly uninteresting to me but it’s comforting to still keep up with it somewhat. Only really accepted this strange situation as fact recently

Same. I played a lot of WoW. I was a US top 5 raider in MoP/WoD. I wrote guides on icy-veins and WoWHead.

Then even though I quit at the start of Legion, I’ve stuck around in the community and occasionally still post/contribute, but it’s getting rarer and rarer the more the game moves on without me.

I feel you haha I also played a lot. (I was raiding at world top 50ish level though)

Also quit at the start of Legion. RNG legendaries screwed me twice (“bad luck prevention” gave me bad ones on two separate characters) and I was beginning my corporate career at the exact same time. I hear it got even worse with artifact power shortly after. Super unfun to be so far behind because RNGsus says “no, you in particular must spend a shitton more time grinding”

I do the tourist thing now with WoW but I’m still talking with players, especially since my duo partner never stops playing.

Less so now, though, since /r/wow was where I participated the most.
