i’d differentiate it by the kind of it’s ui. linux will still feel like a desktop operating system, made for mouse and keyboard, whereas the console has a controller friendly interface. probably not much of an issue if you boot into steam directly through.

genuinely curious, is there any linux DE that is optimised for being connected to a tv and controlled by remote/gamepad from the couch?

i’d argue that a console running linux would be a PC, even if it’s plugged into your living room tv

i love the idea, but p2p filesharing laws are quite strict where i live. i wouldn’t feel 100% safe even using a private tracker, i’ll have to stick to debrid services to cover my ass

not every country has case law. most of Europe is eg using “code law”, which means a precedent doesn’t change the law, but only applies to the one specific case with all its specific context and circumstances taken into account. under slightly different circumstances, a judge may rule differently

MD has a companion app, and you have to grant it special rights via adb (read/write secure settings) first. might also work for tasker

i’ve had the same thought lately. the common arm design approach around the bootloader seems to turn old Android phones and tablets into e-waste sooner than necessary, in theory they could all run Linux and be useful for another ten years. but it’s hard enough to port mainline Linux to Android devices, and almost impossible to get all the included hardware working properly

yes and P4a is already one major GOS/Android version behind, it’s only getting “extended legacy support” releases. i.e. security fixes are merged and backported where possible, but it’s overall not the best setup and they recommend to switch asap.

I’m pretty sure GOS will drop Android 13 (and therefore P4a) as soon as they release Android 15, since the team won’t be maintaining three major Android versions.

CalyxOS ported Android 14 to P4a, so you might squeeze an additional year or so out of it if you switch.

I’d either replace the battery in the old P4a, or get a newer model with 7y software support. But buying a new 4a is probably not your best possible move

the camera is amazing, but you need to use the Google Camera app for it to take advantage of all the Pixel magic. 3rd party camera apps will yield lousy shots comparatively.

4a is end of life already, so no firmware updates from Google. GrapheneOS has legacy builds available for it but doesn’t recommend using them, and they might go away anytime soon

get a used device which is still properly supported, don’t buy brand new e-waste
