I dont even have root. You download the apk for the recommended version of YouTube, which the revanced manager app tells you, select it - it auto picks all the patches - hit apply, wait - then hit install. Takes maybe 2 minutes to install. Then you’re done. Never once had any difficulty beyond that. One time I used a different youtube version than what was recommended, worked fine just didn’t have all the patches.

I dunno why you were trying to sideload it. That’s not necessary. You can do all this in, I’ll be generous and say 15-20 minutes. I’ve done it a few times now and done it for others too, so it usually only takes me 5 to 10. Depends on how fast their phone is to patch the apk.

Throw in another minute to fully disable the official YouTube app and route all YouTube links to open with revanced and you’re set.

My revanced setup literally shows as “Youtube” and functions identically, with sponsorblocking and adblocking. It let me disable shorts entirely and use the click-bait thumbnail circumventer. Took me 5 minutes to setup. I see a video on any app and click on it and it opens up in revanced no problem.

You don’t have to always be ahead. I’ve been using revanced for years now without problems. Before that Vanced. My computer has had ublock origin with 0 issues for years prior to the recent changes. To resolve those I literally had to click 2 buttons in the UI. Bam no ads. Have had no problems since. The time I’ve invested in configuring adblocking since I started watching YouTube, sometime around 2008-9, has probably amounted to 20 minutes of time.

How could you save a png then? We’re talking about digital files where you can absolutely copy a file without facing any legal repercussions for doing so. Copy paste is the same as making a copy of a work and would make sense under copyright law to be illegal. But its not because that’s ridiculous, and no one will ever be charged for going to Google image search and looking at a copyrighted picture on the screen. Its also not illegal for humans to learn from the art of someone else and then create similar art. I dont know how you can or would be able to even detect that someone has trained an AI for this purpose. Training modern AI with pre-made models to draw a specific person or character in a specific art style is trivial. Its hard to do it if you’re unfamiliar but it requires very few training materials to become very effective. ControlNet and LORA have made this possible. So how could you even tell if someone made such a model, they’ve only downloaded a dozen pictures and there is no effective way to tell that they’ve then trained this model. It would have to come down to their creations being noticeable enough to charge them. Either through profiting from it or by posting that content online.

Yes, and personal use exists so that people who are not profiting in any way off of someone else’s copyright are not chargeable under copyright law. Hence why I can download a jpg of an artists painting and that action alone is not breaking any law.

If my AI is not being used to make money, and it is also not being used to slander someone or harass someone, then what law exactly would I be breaking? How would I be harming someone else, by having an AI that I use solely personally and am in no way benefiting from? Can you sue someone for taking a DVD, ripping it, and then rearranging the scenes in a new video file? Have they broken a law solely by creating a derivative work using the original material, even if that work is not making them money and they are commiting no other crime using that work?

One of the biggest things I like about Lemmy is the lack of any business. The whole point is you can run your own instance. Social media shouldn’t be a commodity in the first place, as we can see from the death rattles of web 2 social media giants they really aren’t that profitable anymore. And most nations have a lot of laws they have to adhere to, and public opinion is turning against data farming which is one of their primary sources of revenue.

Personally I’d much prefer Lemmy continue its grass roots and democratized growth. But I cant stop you or anyone else from trying, I will just avoid supporting any attempts to create a business out of the fediverse. The last thing we need here is more capitalists lol

AI has only been capable of… half imitating those things for like a year and a half. And most uses are non commercial, and there is not established case law for personal usage of generative artificial intelligence. It would be hard to sue someone for something they aren’t profiting from, or that they are not using as a form of slander or libel or harassment.

The EU, the UK, and the US are all currently developing new laws surrounding the usage of AI. But this is all incredibly new and therefore in progress.

I was just going to say, handbrake is a good way to cut back a bit on file size if you get the settings right. It is very taxing on hardware tho.

And your search history. That’s… public too. Your personal contacts for your friends and family on your phone, thats wide open public information right. Also any health information you log in your phone. Public info.

It depends on your local government, you might be able to take it to a rentalsman or local equivalent. Figure out what your rights as a tenant are. If you have none, then the best you could hope for would be to form a tenants union. That takes time though.

I definitely hope the… simply massive amount of information stored there is archived in some way. I was troubleshooting some technical issues for a very niche hardware and software application this morning and the only sources I could find were on reddit.

I feel similarly about Discord. There is so much technical knowledge and information that would be lost in the blink of an eye if Discord shut down.

Also, it needs a “Subscribed” page. Default lemmy has this page that only shows you content from communities youre subscribed to. You should see about getting that feed on your app.

Overall though great work, it looks really promising thus far and I’m impressed with how quickly you’ve put this together.

Having a directional antenna is great. If you check the logs on your modem you should be able to see the identifier for the tower you’re connecting to. Using that you can pinpoint it’s location. If you’re really dedicated you can build a tower outside to put a directional antenna above the tree line.

Or at least, that’s what we would have technicians do for customers in rural areas.
