I tried Pop!_OS alpha1 with Cosmic Desktop and I even if the general software quality is still what you might expect from the first alpha release, I was impressed on the high-level design decisions they made with Cosmic. As a sway user who would like a bit more structure and hand-holding in my desktop, I think I’m gonna like Cosmic in a year’s time.
I don’t know. Rust seems like a better C++ to me rather than a better C. Plain C is a very simple language.
Yeah, the Rust guys’ proposition is roughly this:
Hey you guys with 20-30 years of experience doing a single thing very well. Let’s nullify most of that skillset and replace it with a thing we’re good at.
Don’t worry, we will teach you.
They’re not technically wrong about Rust being a better choice for a kernel, of course. They’re just incredibly misinformed about the social hurdles they need to climb over for it to happen.
I thought the level of discourse has increased sharply since lemmy.world got along, and the effect of lemmy.ml’s somewhat extremist stance has lessened. It’s now possible to mostly actually talk here without blocking half of the whole network.
So I would be perfectly ok with dropping lemmy.ml from the rest of the network. But I’m guessing that goes somewhat against the overall philosophy of the whole thing? I don’t suppose the idea of federation was to create even stronger bubbles.
I’m not angry. WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU IMPLY THAT I’M ANGRY
Probably more fascist than communist these days. My actual favourite theory though is that there are way more important things happening under the hood of nations, and whether they’re called communist or democratic or whatever is just a veneer.
James A. Robinson’s book Why Nations Fail for instance provides an interesting alternative way to look at this, that goes beneath the surface.
Just like the far right, everything’s just reflection for you guys? The horseshoe is real.
Would you join me in supporting a defederation between lemmy.ml and these evil liberal instances? JOIN ME COMRADE WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT OUR CHAINS
1, That’s silly, there’s tons of democratic socialist countries that are doing just fine - today! Bolivia, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand - think the US fucks with their way of governing?
All of these countries are free market economies, though. If you classify a country that has public programs as socialist, then USA is a socialist country.
Also, just as a detail, Switzerland is probably one of the most capitalistic countries in the world. They have nearly a flat tax rate, very small amounts of corporate / capital gains taxation and a health care system that is nearly privatized. And it’s all working pretty damned well for them.
There has been a weird switch in the last 10 years. Around 1990s it was obvious to just about everyone in the world how communism is a completely failed ideology. But somehow, it took just a single generation to forget that.
Something something gotta do the exact reverse of your parents whatever they’re doing I guess.
The war sure explains why they have a reason to be antagonist towards South Korea and USA – in a similar way as WW2 explains why Finland is very wary of Russia still in 2000s.
But it doesn’t explain why they insist on keeping their system in the same horrible broken state. Germany and Japan were ravaged by a war and they didn’t go permanently crazy at state level.

Ok, I guess you could argue the point that these countries
DPRK
What the absolute fuck are you talking about.
I’m here mostly because the implementation is superior. If Reddit was accessible directly from here, it’d be a total win-win imho.
It would also be a lose-lose for them, as it would open up their data to free-of-charge use via API without any benefit for them – so it’s not going to happen.
I converted a custom raspberry pi distribution (some kind of a debian I think) into an Arch Linux ARM without a reinstall.
Generally speaking, you shouldn’t do anything on the internet that you absolutely don’t want to become public. If you don’t want people to know your votes, don’t vote.
Getting banned sucks but it’s not great form to complain about it publically. You can just block the sub and move on.
Rather brave to believe that you’ll have a product, an engineering departement, a marketing departement, a support departement or any employees in your startup.
