Lutris + GE-Proton + umu works. If you use GE-Proton as the runner, Lutris automatically uses umu to launch the game which launches within the Steam Pressure Vessel container.
You can manage GE-Proton downloads using Protonplus. The latest version, last I checked, is GE-Proton9-15.

Yep, Unity DE had ads. Then people revolted and Canonical eventually got rid of them and also switched to base Gnome with some extensions.
It definitely happened, I saw it in real time on my install of Ubuntu. But they learned their lesson on this one, I feel.
Not sure why there are some who think this is still a thing, though.
Side note: I’ve not run Ubuntu as my desktop OS I’m quite some time, opting instead for Garuda as of late and have seen no ads thus far :)
And I will not shop there just like I don’t shop at regular GameStop. I’ll stick to local shops that don’t suck.
After being on this Lemmy instance for a while now, I can unequivocally state that I would never want to play WoW with anyone here. But thank you for linking to another WoW service. I enjoy checking them all out to see what they do with the game.

Good luck. My experience with vfio is that it works…ish. There are a lot of compromises still, depending on what kind of setup you really want. I’ve effectively said now that if the game doesn’t work on Linux (which now, like you mentioned, is anti-cheat-related), then it’s not worth playing. Windows Recall was enough to finally break me of this “Windows safety blanket” that I’ve had for 25 years of trying to game on Linux. With Proton and Glorious Eggroll’s ge-proton, everything effectively just works. And one day, all this anti-cheat nonsense will be a thing of the past.
Works quite well for me. But I would agree it’s not the best to start with if having little desktop Linux experience.
Good luck! Linux is sadly not quite yet for everyone, but it’s so much further along than it was when I started in 1999.
I bounced between Linux and Windows for decades, but when the Recall debacle happened, it became clear that Microsoft have lost their collective minds. I wiped my system, put Garuda Linux on it, and everything works quite well for me with no tinkering except with user-level KDE settings. I also changed from an NVIDIA RTX 3070Ti to an AMD RX 7800XT just so everything related to graphics would just work and I didn’t have to wait and hope that explicit sync really does fix everything for NVIDIA on Wayland.
I also use proton-ge for everything (in Steam as well as in Lutris which uses umu-launcher) and every game I’ve attempted to run (thus far on the order of 35+ games), has run great, including Elden Ring. I’ve found in my 25 years experience, the trick with Linux is two-fold: researching hardware to guarantee full Linux support…and having patience. And I’ve fell victim to that last one dozens of times over the years which led me back to windows each time.

It’s always funny when people find the single metric that seems to validate their argument without looking at the rest of the picture. There are 70% Gold and Platinum which means that 70% of those being tested work on Linux.
Yes it’s not perfect. I never once said it was. I simply said those games which have been benchmarked and compared as apples to apples are proven to run better on Linux. And somehow that triggered you into a red herring argument about the viability of Linux gaming because you think that it’s a worthless endeavor.
But, I replied to you in your thread refuting what you said. And you clearly have the intention of being combative about it instead of saying “you know what…you’re right there is a ton of progress that has been made, but for me I’ll stick with what I know.” And let that be the end of it. So I’ll bow out of this pointless conversation.

I have yet to play a game in the past few years that doesn’t run perfectly thanks to Proton and the work Glorious Eggroll is doing. The only games that won’t play are the ones requiring kernel level anti cheat (which is a ridiculous requirement in the first place).
Something tells me you haven’t tried to play games on Linux in the past few years. So I can understand your point of view given that probable inexperience. However, I have been a user of all three OSes for decades and am not a zealot, and the fact that you think I am is enough for me to not waste any more time here.

Awesome!! It’s great to see people of all ages running Linux. I’ve been using it since 1999, but only dumped Windows for good recently.
My parents run Linux. So that’s 2 down.
If you’re using it mostly for gaming, Windows is going to be the superior choice.
From a benchmark perspective this has shown to be false in some or many areas. And outside of kernel-level cheat protection, games are continually hitting Gold on ProtonDB, which means that the list of games only working on Windows is dwindling every day.
And now with umu-launcher, which is now baked into Lutris, the games don’t even have to run via Steam in order to make use of Proton, and especially proton-ge. Thank the Glorious Eggroll! (And thank all others who have had a hand in this Linux gaming renaissance)
So I assert that Windows is not at all the superior choice anymore. And with Recall and other nonsense Microsoft has done, they deserve to lose all the marketshare possible — thus, I am advocating for people to switch to Linux as fast as they can. It’s a tough sell to some, for sure, but if I can get my mother to run Linux, I have a good chance to get anyone on board.
I sure would love a modern, true sequel to Chrono Trigger. Probably unpopular, but maybe even a…gasp…MMO? (Let the beatings commence!)
