Synapse@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is there any good decentralized cloud storage for personal backups as a self-hoster?English81·8 days agoNot sure this is what you are looking for, but syncthing is for self-hosting and it’s Peer-2-Peer. I use it to synchronize my important documents and photos across my devices, it has options for encryption and file versioning.
Syncthing is the 3 in my 3-2-1 backup strategy. It enables me to maintain 3 copies of my files: desktop, phone, NAS
Synapse@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I have some questions about selfhostingEnglish5·11 days agoopenmediavault and casas are good noob-friendly OSes for NAS purpose. Much faster and simpler to get it running than some Proxmox and True NAS overkill solution.
You can also just install whatever Linux OS you like, and plug-in some screen, keyboard and mouse and do your setup this way, like any other computer!
For Hardware, I recommend to build a computer out of standard parts. For what you said, a small motherboard with an integrated Intel N100 CPU and a nice looking case like the Jonsbo N2 will sever you well. This is very close to my current setup, using an older j5040 CPU and it runs everything just fine with no effort (Jellyfin w/ light transcoding, *arr stack, Usenet and torrent clients, syncthing, SMB and NFS filesharing, and more)
I know MS Teams an Zoom both work on Linux, Google meet is web only and obviously works as well. Sometimes the web page of these suckers will give you some pain for using Linux just for the lols but using User-Agent switcher to pretend you’re a Chrome on Windows 11 will suffice to let it work.
Synapse@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What's your recommendation for a small NAS?English5·17 days agoI second this proposition of DIY build. My current build is an older version of this using an ASRock motherboard with integrated Intel j5040. It’s already very capable! I run Jellyfin with HW transcoding and a dozen other containers and there is still plenty of headroom.
The Jonsbo N2 case is pricey but good quality, nice looking and nice to build with ! Cheaper options are there but not as nice in terms of looks and usability.
For me it works great only when watching a HDR video on mpv and everything else looks washed out and pale. Including the entirety of Firefox and its content.
It’s very clear the kitty cat is not doing it on purpose. Unlike, you know the guy…

It will be hard for me to not buy this game. I am a huge fan of the previous 2 games (extensions included). But I will wait at least 2 weeks and check the ratings on Proton DB before anything.

I am not so sure, but I think GPU acceleration is only really working with Firefox in Wayland. Also, check which version of the Nvidia driver you have, maybe there is something newer you can use from the backports repository.

It turns out HEVC decoding on Linux with Firefox 137 and newer does work, but only for MP4 media container and MKV media container is not supported. The bug is open and tracked here: Support mkv|matroska|video/x-matroska in Firefox | bugzilla.mozilla.org
Synapse@lemmy.worldOPto linux4noobs@programming.dev•Firefox HEVC playback with HW acceleration, does it actually works ?English3·1 month agoHello, HEVC decoding works natively with media using .MP4 containers, but it will transcode when using .MKV containers. Found this information on reddit and verified it on my Jellyfin.
Synapse@lemmy.worldto Android@lemmy.world•The Galaxy A56 is the worst mid-range phone I used in 2025English1·2 months agoI use a few of the google apps via the sandbox google-play services on GrapheneOS and it works fine (Maps, Android-Auto, Camera, Playstore).
Synapse@lemmy.worldto Android@lemmy.world•The Galaxy A56 is the worst mid-range phone I used in 2025English11·2 months agoA bit better maybe, but still the worst phones you can possibly buy, in my humble opinion.
I had a Samsung A50 for some time. Worst phone I’ve ever see in my life. Terrible build quality, the thing came apart all by itself, and it’s my work phone that I really use at a minimum. And the worst is how slooooow this phone as always been.
Last year I got it “upgraded” to a A35 5G, it’s a little faster, but the build quality still seems to be rubbish and the bloatware is through the roof !
Synapse@lemmy.worldto Android@lemmy.world•The Galaxy A56 is the worst mid-range phone I used in 2025English2·2 months agoYes ! I’ve got the exact same experience, it was mad ! Pop-up to update a bunch of baggage apps I would never ever want, I dismiss it for it to appear again exactly one week later. I untick everything and press next. It installed the stuff anyway ! This should be illegal.
Synapse@lemmy.worldto Android@lemmy.world•The Galaxy A56 is the worst mid-range phone I used in 2025English1·2 months agoMy SO has had several and really liked them until they broke or got lost (the phones’ quality really aren’t to blame here). I’ve offered the Sony Xperia 10 VI to my dad last Christmas and it doesn’t come with much bloat at all, I would call it good.
But if you want a completely bloat-free phone, you can’t beat Google Pixel flashed with GrapheneOS.
Oh, there are going to be some nice modes 😏. Can’t wait to be playing as Shrek !
