  • I am tempted to compare the market of handheld PC to this of Single Board Computers.

You have on one hand the Raspberry Pi and steamdeck: first successful on a niche market, develop the hardware and the software to deliver a complete experience, open and hackable.

On the other hand, you have all the followers, throwing out some random imitations, with better spec. sheets, but no Software support, or just the bare minimum and ultimately the experience offered isn’t a match.

How are they hoping to compete with the steamdeck if none of them put in the effort to develop a complete and functional user experience? Acer and Asus with collect the scraps and nothing more.

I am joking of course. I am a privacy freak myself:

    1. All my computers run Linux
    2. I self-host all what I can and encrypt as much as I can by myself too
    3. On desktop, Mic and Cam are connected to a USB hub with individual switches such that they are powered ON only when I need them
    4. Laptop is a Framework 13 with HW switches for both Cam and Mic

There is something about the webcam switch on the Lenovo from work, that I like better than the Framework: The switch also physically blocks the camera. It makes me feel more safe and it’s actually much more intuitive to understand when it is disable. On Framework, the switch shows either red or black, but I never know what is enable and disable. Is it red for “Careful, it’s active !” or red for “Disable” ? (It’s Red=Disable, Black=Active).

  • check the privacy policy of meta and TikTok vs Apple

Saying Apple is much better than TikTok, Meta and Google, is just setting the bare very low… Apple advertise heavily about how privacy oriented they are, it’s only fair to compare them to other privacy champions (regardless of company size) e.g. Proton, Signal.

[…] just isn’t possible for your average user […] Users don’t want to know what E2E is […]

I absolutely agree with you. It’s not possible for most to be a security conscious self-hosting gourou, and we can’t expect for everyone to care about digital privacy and security. It’s why I see it as our duty, as more tech-savy people, to set the standard for the industry, advocate and lobby for the companies to do better.

You don’t ask nurse to set the safety standards for electrical installations, but everyone benefits from electricians and engineers defining and setting these safety standards !

It’s actually not that people don’t care about privacy. It’s they don’t know about privacy, because they don’t think about it, and it’s alright. But ask someone random to hand you over their phone unlocked and start browsing their photos. They will care.

Anyway, I’m glad we could have an educating conversation here. I got to learn a couple of things :)
