Yeah, since about 2016 it has started to get really bad though. I remember when I would be looking for a solution to a computer related issue, all the top results were super useful Tom’s Hardware and AnandTech forum posts. But of course nobody does SEO for forum posts because they’re just trying to help people not make money, so instead now all of the probably AI written crap is in the top results which half the time is only barely related to what I searched
I still am using Google and I hate how useless it has become since SEO started to become a thing in the last 5 or 10 years. Maybe I should try Kagi. Does it have location specific search results
Ah I see, yeah after commenting that I remembered seeing something a few years ago about a laptop that has slim mech keys, they must use similar switches to that keyboard.
That’s a nice keyboard, I personally can’t stand the “gamer aesthetic” so it looks good to me. I used to use a Cherry keyboard which looked like one of those large beige keyboards from the 90s, which I liked not just because Cherry manufacters the switches you see in more expensive mech keyboards so it was nice having a Cherry brand keyboard, but also because it looked quite unique compared to modern keyboards. That keyboard had Cherry blue switches, unfortunately I broke that keyboard (entirely my fault.) My current keyboard looks very similar to that one, with Kailh blue switches.
There’s two main companies that manufacture the keys for mech keyboards, Cherry and Kailh. Cherry is a German company and their switches last longer and are usually considered to be a little better to use but that is quite subjective. Kailh is a Chinese company, like I say they don’t last for quite as long but you’ll definitely still get minimum 3 years out of them, most likely they’ll last 5+ years with daily use. Kailh switches are cheaper and so the keyboards are cheaper (except for Razer, they use Kailh switches but charge the same price as companies that make keyboards with Cherry switches lol.) I haven’t used Cherry/Kailh brown switches (that keyboard has Kailh browns) but I understand they’re good switches for general use, especially in an office context. They’re less clicky but otherwise similar to blues.
You might want look up a comparison of the various switches, but here’s a graphic I could find with some basic info. Linear switches have no “bump” where you can feel the switch being actuated, tactile and clicky switches do but with tactiled you only feel it, there is no corresponding click sound (or much less of one.)

I definitely aren’t as fanatical about them as most people, I don’t mind using non mech keys. But I definitely prefer using a nice mech keyboard when I have the option.
You know you can get quiter mech keyboards? Also sometimes people put O rings on the stem of the key to dampen the sound. I don’t think there are any slim mech keyboards- though there are nice small 50%, 60%, 65% and 70% keyboards

Oh did it only work on one channel? There’s probably a way to do it that will work on all channels. When I tried the other day too I found that the banner was removed but the space it took up remained so it didn’t really help. But I noticed it gives you the option to edit some CSS/HTML so maybe doing that can make it work.
Well a mechanical keyboard could help you type a little faster actually. I think the primary appeal of them is that they feel nice to type on though. Another reason people buy them is because they’re good for playing games competitively such as CS:GO.

I mean it kind of ends up being a Skinner box anyway just because of the loop of scrolling, seeing a post, looking at it and repeating. But I agree nobody is actively trying to trap you in one.
This would be so fucking annoying, I don’t use reddit day to day anymore but it’s still a useful research tool when I see results from it on Google. I don’t hate their search feature quite as much as some but I still don’t want to use it most of the time.
This seems so dumb for them to do, I feel like having their content listed on search engines is s major advantage they have over Facebook et al.
Well I never said MacOS on ARM isn’t a lot better than Windows on ARM, I’ve heard about the issues people have had with their ARM Surface Pros.
I think for the specific use case you mentioned, being someone who needs to do more than just web browsing and needs to go without access to an electrical outlet often, while not needing to use x86 software- in that case sure if you can afford it a MacBook is good value because not really anything else competes with it.
I just see a lot of people drop $1000+ on these things and then just watch YouTube on it and edit Google docs etc lol. That is more what I was thinking of when I say they’re overpriced. Those people are just buying Macbooks, and other Apple products because Apple is a very powerful brand which is why they can have relatively fat profit margins because the strong brand image makes their products’ demand more inelastic. Not saying I have anything against that though. It’s not like I spend all of my money perfectly rationally, everyone has different things they like to splurge on I suppose.
Yeah that’s definitely quite interesting, it’s pretty similar to what Microsoft was trying to do with putting Windows on phones I the Early 2010s. I think only really Sony ever adopted it for their phones and they never sold well, but I thought it was interesting at the time.
There’s a decent amount of ARM laptops that are running Windows so maybe that it where the laptop market is heading, it makes sense because the big.LITTLE cores ARM SOCs use are specifically designed to use as little power of course. A Chromebook I had a while ago had a (iirc) Tegra K1 ARM and that had great battery life even for a Chromebook.
As far as pricing on Apple products goes I don’t think you will ever convince me they’re good value for money :P. Sure 3x the price of comparable products is am exaggeration, I would say it’s more like 1.5 or 1.75x the price normally. I mean saying it’s “good for web browsing” essentially just means it doesn’t have good components but these things are priced in the range of what like $1000 right, you could get a nice chromebook that also has an ARM CPU and is good for web browsing as half the price. I’m sure MacOS on ARM is a more useful OS than ChromeOS in terms of the software you can use on it, but for most users that probably isn’t even important.
I think there’s a reason Apple has the largest cash reserves and of any company and the highest market cap (not sure if that’s the case ATM) but they move less products than companies like Samsung, it’s because they have fat profit margins. I’m not saying their products are bad, they’re mostly great and some of their products are genuinely disruptive. I just think they aren’t good value you know. Which is fine, they aren’t really meant to be I don’t think.
Huh I haven’t really kept up with consumer tech for the last few years, that’s interesting. Didn’t they have software issues with instruction sets being different? Or does MacOS being Unix based help with that or something. I do know their mobile processors have been competitive especially in single core performance for a while so I’m sure their desktop ones are good.
But, either way they products were still 3x the price of comparable products even when they had crappy x86 Intel CPUs lol. I’m still not very convinced they’re not overpriced sorry to say
Yeah I guess Apple have there own x86 chips now? Regardless I would rather have a normal computer with an AMD or Intel chip and pay a normal price. I’m sure those CPUs would be better for my purposes anyway
Ahh I see, yeah that’s a tricky situation. Maybe one of these solutions could work? the first paragraph or so says that if you can turn the Mac on, even if you cant do anything, recovering the data might not be as hard
