Well running a server and no longer interacting with a service can be two different things. From an organizational standpoint I could absolutely understand them not wanting or needing the expense of another service to maintain. Even for just their own use. As long as they still have accounts and post to the fediverse. I don’t see a big issue

Depends a bit on the type of person and content you want to follow. But if you like retro computer Shenanigans etc. I know action retro is on Lemmy and Mastodon and I follow them on mastodon. But yes General content for the normies probably not so much.

It’s simply acting as a connector. And directing traffic around Nat Etc for lay people or those who don’t want to bother with setting up and securing server software or such things. It was instant. Like the file being hashed and info being generated. Then slapping you with a QR code or a string to give to the person you’re sending it to Initiate the transfer

The site isn’t hosting the file. Sure you can host your own FTP etc. But there is a lot of security risks and vulnerabilities that arise because of that. You can even host your own Magic wormhole. It’s under MIT license. Just have to open the ports Etc. It should however theoretically have a lot less attack surface than HTTP FTP and similar protocols. Nothing is invulnerable of course.

Check it out. A lot of the systems like Discord Etc limit file sizes so vigorously. Because they operate like men in the middle. Can you send them the file first. Then whoever you’re sending it to can download it from them. It’s adding extra steps to the whole thing. With something like Wormhole you can even link a file from your phone. As long as you are on Wi-Fi and not going to be chewing through data minutes LOL. All the app does is connect the end points. Once they’re connected then you send the file directly to whomever you want. And the only limits on file sizes are realistically at the endpoints.

Authoritarians are authoritarian first. Everything else is a very distant second. I really hate when people call Marxist leninists/tankies fascist. They do a lot of the same things but there are distinct differences which makes one different from the other.

I think with the heavy resurgence of fascist politics around the globe right now. A lot of people sort of just learned the term Fascism and just randomly apply it to things it shouldn’t be. The truth is Marxist leninists are to tankies what Liberals are to fascism. And the funny thing is both groups will usually downvote that heavily LOL. Despite it being a basic fact of their general authoritarian Behavior.

Lemmy.ml federates with hexbear and grad. As a world user I don’t see hexbear and grad because world blocks them thankfully. Unless you are on server X what server X blocks in no way impacts what you see. So they need to petition their local admin.

That said. I think the only reason world still federates with lemmy.ml. is that so many open source projects communities are still there. They need to get moved off to proper instances like KDE or Mozilla have done. Or we need to start a dedicated instance for it.

Hex bear and Leningrad are both defederated. Just lemmy.ml isn’t which I have blocked. Mostly because it’s annoying ending up on one of their communities and then having them get all upset when you point out basic facts.

For myself emulation and FPGA are fine. But for speed running or any other number of things, actual hardware are important.

This is actual hardware. Yes simple arm cores can pretty faithfully emulate much of this. But that’s emulation. These are bespoke devices, built from actual old chips. Offering a level of comparability and predictability emulation can’t always achieve. It isn’t for everyone.

Adrian Black ended up with a non functioning unit sent to him by a viewer that bought one. The seller rather than pay for postage for the broken one to be sent back to China just told them to keep it and sent them a replacement instead. Adrian ends up troubleshooting and fixing it but you can get a pretty good look at everything going on inside and some of the old chips involved.

Interesting. I’ve only had one system that had hardware issue with any of them. And it was of course the finger print reader. Though I suppose it could be a WiFi issue.

Gonna put this out there. Ended up in a thread on ML the other day. The poster/admin got a little unhinged, over 4 down votes. 4. Took to the admin panel to see who dared down vote him. Convinced he had been the victim of the tiniest not swarm ever.

It’s troubling behavior for anyone with power.
