  • I’ve had problems with just regular package upgrades. Also to be fair, Windows does have service packs which can add significant new OS features without updating to a whole other version, so it’s not like Windows XP/Vista/7/10/11 stay the exact same from when you install them.

Plus the irony is that a lot of the features in this meme have to do with Wayland, and I can’t find many LTS releases that even use it? It’ll take years before these features are included in releases that aren’t bleeding edge and will still require a whole OS reinstall to actually get them.

Must have had bad luck! I mean I’ve fixed many a Windows computer in my time so I know it’s not perfect, but I guess my expertise helps me avoid a lot of the pitfalls of Windows by not loading up all kinds of dodgy software.

Linux though will break when you do everything right, and that’s what gets me every time.

I mean I’ve worked IT for decades so I know how to do this stuff, but I also don’t want to do it after 8 hours of being paid to do it at work and all I want is to pull up a game to play on my free time without any more effort.

Linux is only free if your time is free. I also would never recommend Linux to anyone who isn’t an IT professional. 🤷

I’ve had Windows installations that chugged along for 10 years with only regular software updates. It does get slow and bloated over time, but it keeps working without any maintenance or fixing.

Meanwhile I can’t find a Linux distribution that doesn’t self-destruct in about 6 months of regular desktop use. Every time some software update corrupts GRUB, breaks X/Wayland, or something else that unexpectedly makes my computer unusable and requires me to spend hours fixing it or in some cases giving up and installing a different distro.

Let me know when a desktop Linux distro is as reliable as my 10 year old Windows install please.

  • I’ve been moving over to Fastmail. Easy to use, tons of features, great price. 👍

Also quick tip regardless of which provider you end up on: Register a domain name for yourself and use it for your email address. This way if you want to change email providers again in the future or even host it yourself, you can take your domain name and addresses with you.

  • Yup. Now I also get that exposure and engagement are important to small businesses, but to that end they shouldn’t lock themselves to one place either. Point out the benefits of more open solutions like Bluesky and Mastodon, and the benefits of setting up their own hosted site/blog that they can then broadcast on social media but slowly cut them out as a middle man by pushing customers to their site directly.

And most certainly businesses should never use the “algorithm” on social media to collect data or get “free” advertising such as those “like/repost to win” style posts. Those are not free advertising, those are doing free data collection work for Meta.

  • The only big tech firms Trump is going to crack down on are the ones that didn’t “donate” $1m to his inauguration fund. Apple, Amazon, Meta, and others… They’re all going to be just fine.

I wonder if Andy paid his tribute yet or if he’s hoping some virtue signaling might save him from the incoming shit storm. Let’s see how this plays out. 🍿

  • Traefik basically has certbot built in so when you configure a new hostname on a service it automatically handles requesting and refreshing the cert for you. It can either request individual certificates for each hostname or a wildcard certificate (*.yourdomain.com) that covers all subdomains.

The neat trick is that in Docker you configure Traefik by adding Docker tags to the other containers you want to proxy. When you start up a container, Traefik automatically reads the config from the tags, does any necessary setup, then viola it’s ready to go!

  • Basically the Cloudflare tunnel client connects from the computer running your services (or proxy) out to Cloudflare’s edge servers and your DNS hostname is set to the IP of one of Cloudflare’s edge servers. Cloudflare acts like a reverse proxy by sending incoming SSL requests for your hostname to your tunnel client through their own network. The DNS record doesn’t expose your public IP and the Cloudflare tunnel client easily works behind firewalls, NAT, and doesn’t need a static IP because it connects outbound to Cloudflare’s network.

The biggest limitation is that this only works for SSL traffic because it can be routed by hostname in the SNI without needing a client on the client side. They do offer tunnels for other connections, but that requires their client running on both sides so it’s more like a traditional VPN again.

  • The biggest reason to use VPN is that some ISPs may take issue with you running a web server over a residential service when they see incoming HTTP requests to your IP. If you don’t want to require VPN, then Cloudflare tunnels are perfect for this and they also solve the need for dynamic DNS if you want to use static domain because your domain points to the Cloudflare edge servers and they route it to you wherever your tunnel endpoint is running.

Past that, Traefik is a great reverse proxy that can manage getting LetsEnrcypt SSL certificates for you even with wildcard domains and would still work fine with dynamic DNS.

For cheap plastic “thingies” if you know a friend with a 3D printer they can be of massive help. Even if you don’t have such a friend, there are domestic businesses that will print and ship things for you. Granted they aren’t always as cheap, but easily better for the environment due to being more local.
