I can’t find any Lemmy communities from Mastodon. For example, when I enter !commonlisp@lemmy.ml in the search box of the Mastodon web app while signed into my Fosstodon account, I get the message 0 results. Entering a community URL in the search box returns the same message.
Is this supposed to work? Is the issue at Lemmy’s or at Mastodon’s end?

Kinda, you should use @commonlisp@lemmy.ml but won’t show anything, you need to follow, after that when new posts are made all posts and comments will show as reply on mastodon.

Also note that Lemmy
doesdıd not implement Authorized Fetch until two weeks ago, meaning certain instances won’t be able to contact Lemmy instances even if you do everything correctly.
