I’m trying to identify what special edition this Xbox controller is but I’m struggling to find any info online that matches it.

It is grey and red with metallic red d-pad and triggers and has “you died” printed in the centre at the bottom. Initially that made me think it was some kind of dark souls related edition but searching those words just brings me up endless threads of people having issues with using a controller and the game.

I’ve scrolled through lists and lists of pictures of special editions and can’t seem to find the right one, so does anyone have any insight into what this may be?

Maybe it is one someone has had made for themselves as I found it in a charity shop but it seems too good quality to be custom work and is definitely an official controller.

Any help appreciated!

That website was really tempting… until I remembered that these run on AA batteries and don’t have gyro or a touchpad. M$ really selling an 85$ controller without the features of the 50$ ps5 controller

Edit: apparently dualsense are 75$ now?? Wtf. and apparently they’ve never been 50$? Just discard my comment

that these run on AA batteries

Its actually a plus for me. I don’t want to use proprietary batteries and rather use standard AA sized (rechargable) batteries. They can be charged with any battery charger, you can have multiple of them and each pair lasts much longer than any builtin battery. I agree on the other parts for missing gyro and price though.

Yeh this one cost me £4 and came with a recharchable battery pack. I’ve always used my controller wired (playing on PC) but now maybe I’ll try wireless!

If latency was an issue for you, I can assure that its not even for competitive gaming. I played years with friends Fighting games in a competitive manner (offline) and since 360 days it was wireless. And in general with modern controller and batteries, a pair lasts for me at least a week if no longer, when I play at least 5 hours per day. Can’t beat that! Replacement is also cheap. Good if you don’t want to rely on original batteries in the future.

Nah I’ve never had issues with latency and don’t play anything competitive I’ve always just prefered wired to be honest. My favourite controllers were the wired 360 controllers that got rid of the massive bump at the back and were a really nice weight. I wish they did an official modern wired only version.

100%! I love controllers that use AA’s. So much easier to replace the batteries. I’m dreading the day I need to go hunt down replacement batteries for things like my DS, 3ds, Playstation controllers, etc. It’s probably not hard to find replacements. But it requires more work than just whipping out some rechargeable AA’s and calling it a day lol

Thank you for the info, I just presumed it wasn’t custom as it looked too well done and I wasn’t aware of this service. Thanks so much for the reply!

I knew custom controllers were a thing but honestly the quality looked too good that I presumed it wasn’t a custom one. Thank you for the reply though! Solves that mystery :D

Yeh, it is unfortunstely a micro USB controller but it cost me £4 with a recharable battery pack inside so I’m not gonna complain at all. Just didn’t know where it had come from! Thanks for the reply :)

Cheers man for the reply. Yeh it seems like this is the case I just didn’t know that it was a thing.

I’ve bought coloured buttons and modded my own controllers before but it was the text on the bottom that was throwing me as it has been professionally added! I didn’t know that design lab was a thing :)

The “you died” text on it makes me wonder if it was some kind of special Dark Souls thing. But I don’t remember any special Dark Souls release on Xbox.

It could have been custom made back when they were doing that if you bought directly from MS. Not sure if they still do that, but I rememeber it being a thing back in, I think, the XB360 days.

Yeh it was the text that was throwing me. I’ve customised my own controllers with different coloured buttons etc before so that part was easily explainable but the text is professionally added and I never knew that was a thing people did (seems like a waste of money to me)

Turns out it is a design labs custom one as per the other responses though. Learn something new every day!
