having only old posts with zero comments when:
is full of new posts and comments?
Is lemmy.ml federating small communities or is there some reason why I’m not getting the Ew information?
I’m subbed with a user from my instance.

Double emphasis on the and there … this problem comes up somewhat regularly and this is often the fix.
You can select multiple languages (in case you didn’t know) and you do so (in the default UI at least, from memory) by holding down Ctrl or Cmd (for macOS) while selecting the languages.
