I understand the problem with server overloading and the problems with hosting big database etc. But can’t we host short , compressed videos with just good enough quality . Like some of the high quality gifs on lemmy is much ,much bigger than the kind of videos i described . Or am i missing something ? I do understand the issues but then why do they allow big gifs is it because people wouldn’t post much gifs but everyone and their dog will post videos if allowed ? I am saying if 5 mb is the max size of gif you allow set that as videos limit too . AND I NOT AT ALL AM ASKING FOR VIDEOS ON LEMMY JUST ASKING A QUESTION . I IN NO WAY WANT VIDEOS ON LEMMY BECAUSE I KNOW HOW THAT WOULD IMPACT THE INSTANCE HOSTERS . MAYBE JUST MAYBE I SHOULD PUT MY WHOLE THOUGHTS IN A POST BEFORE POSTING AND STOP EDITING IN THINGS AS I GO LIKE AN IDIOT .

EDIT : I put the last sentence in caps because i just wanted to draw attention to it and i am not angry .

As an instance admin, I would prefer not to have users uploads videos or GIFs on Lemmy.

Why? Because Lemmy instances make a local copy of media hosted on other instances. Right now, without any cleaning, my instance has been accumulating 18GB of pictures since July. Imagine how much more that would be if videos were in the mix.

Depending on the nature and technology involved in the “gif”, gifs of the same quality are usually larger per second just because they’re not real well-optimized. I think the issue is more the popularity+length+quality of the stuff that will get posted if you allow “real” videos as opposed to just gifs, which will lead to a massive increase in storage and bandwidth.

I think the impact of big gifs is minimal in practice relative to other stuff that puts load on the server (even if they are, second for second, larger), whereas the impact in practice of hosting potentially-higher-quality video content would be a whole different ballgame

I wasn’t tryin’ to say it to disturb you. It sounds like you’re pretty much in agreement with reasons it might be a bad idea, so why so angry about someone saying back to you, yes those reasons might potentially make it a bad idea.

          ❤️ It is ok

Caps lock is often interpreted as yelling/anger. In the future I recommend instead pressing enter a couple of times at the end of your post, and adding a section that starts with “Edit:”.
