Old good factorio headless Penguin, it’s like that for so long…
Hello fellow Factorio players :)
Hello! I downloaded it again, time to finally send that 🚀
So no head?
Headless often means software that has no graphical interface, and can run in the background. These are usually server software, or something that can run as a server.
The headless build of Factorio is just the multiplayer server, so you can’t play with it, but you can run it so that you and your friends can connect and play on the same same file.
The normal build can host the server too, afaik that too allows to be started with a CLI command, but the headless version is probably more efficient when you don’t need the GUI.Some of us got your joke, no worries
Vine…forgotten…
Explain.
You say some software is “headless” if you can launch it, log-off your computer and it keeps running.
I imagine it’s a link suitable to use with c-url, but I never even noticed it’s there.
Nope, it’s their server software. This is a screenshot from the Factorio webpage, which is a video game. So, the normal Linux download is the playable game and you grab the headless download, if you want to host a multiplayer server.
Your definition of “headless” is also somewhat wonky. It mostly means that it can function without a GUI, e.g. in the case of a server it does I/O via network ports and logs out any events that happen.
This does often mean that you can log off (which in particular closes the GUI session), and it continues running. But if you launch a headless program underneath your particular user, with which you’re then going to log off, then it will close regardless (and not just because your GUI terminal emulator closes).
Of course, most headless programs will have a SystemD service associated and ideally run under an isolated user anyways, so that will prevent them from being stopped when you log off.Oh, the headless version of the game makes much more sense than a headless link.
But if you launch a headless program underneath your particular user, with which you’re then going to log off, then it will close regardless
Nohup is your friend.
How does it run?
I either run it as a service (systemd, cron) or launch a session that is not logged out (tmux).
That’s actually super clever lol. How has this not been done to death already?
